In the midst of a deadly listeria food poisoning outbreak, an increasing number of food products are being recalled, including popular snack foods that may have been planned for Super Bowl Sunday party menus.

Rizo Lopez Foods Inc. Implicated in the Outbreak

Federal health officials have identified Rizo Lopez Foods Inc. of Modesto, Calif. as the producer behind the listeria outbreak. This food contamination has tragically claimed the lives of two individuals and has left over two dozen others severely ill since 2014, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Investigation Confirms Dairy Products as the Source

Health officials had previously investigated cases related to this outbreak in 2017 and 2021; however, it was only through new laboratory and inspection information that they were able to definitively confirm the source when additional cases emerged in December.

Expanding Recall List

Rizo Lopez Foods has taken immediate action by recalling over 60 soft cheeses, yogurts, and sour creams. These products are sold under various brands, including Tio Francisco, Don Francisco, Rizo Bros, Rio Grande, Food City, El Huache, La Ordena, San Carlos, Campesino, Santa Maria, Dos Ranchitos, Casa Cardenas, and 365 Whole Foods Market.

Consumers are urged to check their food products carefully and to discard any items from the above-mentioned brands if they are part of the recall.

Recall of Contaminated Foods Nationwide

The recent recall of certain foods has raised concerns for food-service providers and retailers across the country. Specifically, these products were sold at deli counters, further increasing the potential reach of the contamination.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that approximately 1,600 people fall victim to listeria food poisoning annually. Listeria infections can have severe consequences and, in some rare cases, even lead to death. Individuals who are pregnant, over the age of 65, or have weakened immune systems are especially susceptible to this dangerous pathogen. Typical symptoms include muscle aches, fever, and tiredness, which usually manifest within two weeks of consuming contaminated foods. However, it is worth noting that symptoms may occur earlier or later than this timeframe.

In light of this situation, the CDC strongly advises consumers with the recalled products to dispose of them immediately. Furthermore, it is crucial to thoroughly clean not only the refrigerator but also all other surfaces and contact points in the kitchen area. Listeria has the ability to survive in the refrigerator and infect other foods or areas if proper precautions are not taken.
