Neste, the Finnish refiner, and Vopak have announced their collaboration to enhance the supply of renewable fuels on the U.S. West Coast. They have commissioned terminal capacity at Vopak's Los Angeles terminal to store Neste's sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel. With a combined capacity of 148,000 cubic meters (39 million gallons), this move showcases how storage capacity for traditional products can be repurposed to accommodate future-focused alternatives like SAF and renewable diesel.

Increasing Availability of Renewable Fuels

The agreement between Neste and Vopak is a long-term initiative, although the exact duration was not disclosed. Neste highlighted that the Los Angeles terminal is well-connected to various fuel logistics channels, including vessels, barges, trucks, and pipelines. By leveraging this strategic location, Neste aims to boost the availability of its renewable fuels.

This expansion will allow Neste to provide SAF at Los Angeles International Airport and renewable diesel for fueling stations along the transportation route from Los Angeles to San Diego. Neste has already been supplying renewable fuels to California since 2016, following the state's adoption of its Low Carbon Fuel Standard.

Paving the Way for a Sustainable Future

As a result of Neste's renewable diesel displacing over 5.3 billion gallons (approximately 16 million tons) of fossil diesel since the inception of California's LCFS program, it has gained popularity and considerable usage among municipalities and businesses in the state. Furthermore, Neste's SAF is readily available at major airports throughout California.

This collaboration marks another significant step towards achieving a greener future, as traditional storage facilities are adapted to meet the storage needs of sustainable fuel options. By repurposing existing infrastructure, Neste and Vopak demonstrate their commitment to fostering cleaner transportation solutions.
