Netflix Inc. has finally lifted the veil of secrecy by releasing a comprehensive report on viewership data. For the first time, the streaming giant has presented the total hours viewed for nearly all its series and movies.

A Step Towards Transparency

Notably, these numbers hold substantial importance for advertisers as well, considering the growing popularity of Netflix's ad-supported tier.

The "What We Watched" Report

Netflix's recently released report, titled "What We Watched," ranks every Netflix title that has accumulated at least 50,000 hours of viewing time between January and June. This report will undergo updates every six months, ensuring up-to-date information for enthusiasts.

In an impressive feat, the report covers data for an astounding 18,000 titles, with a staggering total of nearly 100 billion hours viewed.

Understanding the Data

Nevertheless, there are a few nuances to consider when interpreting the numbers. Since there are no benchmarks available, these figures cannot be directly compared to traditional ratings like Nielsen. Additionally, the focus on total hours viewed may skew the results towards movies and hour-long dramas rather than half-hour comedies. Therefore, it's vital to acknowledge that these figures may not entirely reflect a title's popularity.

With this unveiling of viewership data, Netflix paves the way for a more transparent and informative streaming experience. As viewers and industry insiders, we can now better understand and appreciate the shows and movies that captivate audiences worldwide.

Netflix's Top Titles

Release dates play a significant role in determining the popularity of shows on Netflix. For instance, "Suits" dominated Netflix's weekly top 10 list for 15 weeks during the summer and fall. However, it only ranked 73rd on the list because it didn't make its debut on the streaming platform until June 23.

The top spot on the list was claimed by "The Night Agent," a thrilling political conspiracy series that garnered an impressive 812,100,000 hours of views since its release in March. Following closely behind was the second season of the beloved family dramedy "Ginny & Georgia," which accumulated 665,100,000 hours of views. The Korean revenge thriller "The Glory" secured the third position with a remarkable 622,800,000 hours. Also making the top five were "Wednesday," a spinoff of "The Addams Family," and the highly-anticipated "Queen Charlotte," a prequel to the hit series "Bridgerton."

Out of the ten most-watched titles, an overwhelming majority of nine were Netflix originals. The only exception was the seventh-ranked show, Season 3 of the Spanish-language Telemundo drama "La Reina del Sur," which secured 429,600,000 hours of views. Netflix also emphasized that 30% of its overall viewing time was dedicated to non-English-speaking content.

Among movies on Netflix, the most-watched title was "The Mother," an action-packed drama featuring Jennifer Lopez, with a staggering 249,900,000 hours of views.
