LOS ANGELES — The repairs for an elevated Los Angeles freeway, which had been closed due to an arson fire, are progressing at a faster pace than expected. California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Thursday that the lanes are scheduled to reopen by next Tuesday.

During an evening news conference, Governor Newsom expressed optimism about the state of the bridge structure, stating, "The bridge structure itself seems to be in better shape than we anticipated." He confidently assured people that the freeway will be fully accessible with five lanes in both directions no later than Tuesday of next week.

To expedite the repairs, over 250 workers have been laboring around the clock, according to Governor Newsom.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass joined in expressing relief over the progress made so far, saying, "This is a good day in Los Angeles."

The arson fire was swift in spreading across an area of 8 acres. It was fueled by various combustible materials including pallets, cars, construction materials, and hand sanitizer that were stored underneath the freeway in an industrial neighborhood. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, 16 individuals from a nearby homeless encampment were relocated to shelters for their safety.

Officials continue to investigate the arson incident. No arrests have been made so far and Governor Newsom has mentioned that investigators are looking into the possibility of multiple individuals being involved.

Approximately 300,000 vehicles rely on this section of the freeway on a daily basis. As a result, the city has been urging commuters to seek alternative routes such as using buses and trains, or to work remotely from home.
