Stellantis N.V. (NYSE: STLA), formerly known as Fiat Chrysler, announced on Tuesday that it has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Orano to establish a joint venture focused on recycling end-of-life electric vehicle (EV) batteries and scrap materials. This strategic move aims to enhance Stellantis' position in the EV battery value chain by ensuring a reliable supply of cobalt, nickel, and lithium - essential components for electric vehicles and the transition to a sustainable energy future.

Partnering for Sustainable Solutions

Orano, a prominent French company with a workforce of 17,000, is engaged in various activities such as uranium mining, conversion-enrichment, spent fuel recycling, nuclear logistics, dismantling, and nuclear cycle engineering. Together with Stellantis, the joint venture will produce materials referred to as "black mass" or "active mass." These materials can be further refined at Orano's planned hydrometallurgical plant in Dunkirk, enabling their reuse in the production of batteries. As a result, the joint venture will contribute to the realization of a circular economy by closing the loop and reducing waste.

Strengthening the EV Battery Value Chain

By establishing this partnership, Stellantis secures additional access to crucial resources for the mass production of EV batteries. Cobalt, nickel, and lithium play vital roles in electrification and the energy transition. With a dedicated recycling process, Stellantis aims to maximize the use of these resources, minimizing reliance on new mining activities. This eco-friendly approach ensures a sustainable supply chain while reducing the environmental impact associated with battery production and disposal.

The collaboration between Stellantis and Orano exemplifies a commitment to innovative and sustainable solutions within the automotive industry. By repurposing end-of-life batteries and recycling scrap materials, this joint venture is poised to make significant contributions towards a greener future.
