Chinese electric vehicle producer NIO is making strides in the ever-growing integration between smartphone and automotive technology. The company has announced plans to launch its own phone in the second half of September. This move is aimed at enhancing the driving experience for its users, particularly those utilizing vehicles built on NIO's NT2.0 platform.

During an earnings call on Tuesday, CEO William Li highlighted their intention to use the phone as a tool to provide the best possible experience for NIO vehicle owners. As vehicle software and smartphone integration become increasingly essential to a car's value, NIO seeks to stand out by offering a seamless user experience.

Earlier this year, General Motors surprised the automotive industry by choosing to drop Apple's CarPlay app and similar technologies. Instead, they opted for custom software, reflecting the importance of tailored integration between vehicles and smartphones.

Despite NIO's foray into the phone market, Li clarified that they are not entering into direct competition with established phone manufacturers. Their product will run on the widely-used Android operating system.

In premarket trading on Wednesday, American depositary receipts of NIO experienced a 4.3% decline. This follows the company's second-quarter earnings, which fell short of market expectations.
