David Scott, the head of Exxon Mobil Co.’s shale oil and gas production business, has been arrested in Texas on charges of sexual assault. The 49-year-old executive was taken into custody on Thursday afternoon and released on $30,000 bond. The arrest took place at a hotel near Exxon’s headquarters in Spring, Texas.

The specific details of the incident remain unclear at this time.

Scott has an impressive career spanning 26 years with Exxon Mobil, working in various locations including Australia, the U.K., the United Arab Emirates, and Angola. Currently serving as the vice president of Exxon’s upstream unconventional unit, Scott is responsible for overseeing operations in the Permian Basin, a rich oil-producing region in western Texas and New Mexico.

In response to the allegations, Exxon Mobil issued a statement acknowledging the situation. While they stated that it is a personal matter and declined to comment further, they did confirm that Scott will not continue his work responsibilities during the ongoing investigation.

The timing of Scott’s arrest coincides with Exxon Mobil's reported pursuit of a major acquisition. The company is said to be nearing a deal worth approximately $60 billion to acquire shale driller Pioneer Natural Resources. It remains uncertain how Scott's arrest might impact his potential involvement in the deal.

As the investigation unfolds, Exxon Mobil faces challenges on multiple fronts with both legal and strategic implications.
